October is Dyslexia Awareness Month.
Its purpose is to broaden support for those with this particular learning difficulty. Dyslexia is not a disorder of any kind. In fact, the intelligence of dyslexic people is not affected by their dyslexia. However, this learning impairment causes challenges with writing, reading, and spelling.
An estimated 1 in 5 Americans have dyslexia, representing as many as 90% of all people with learning difficulties.
Therefore, the New Age Spa Institute, located in Des Plaines Illinois, takes a distinctive training approach responsive to every type of learner. By interconnecting most classes with Theory, Instructor Demonstration, and Student Hands-On Practice, our students are able to hear, see, and perform their studies. This in turn helps students better retain information.
Learning to read can be a significant challenge for students with dyslexia. Fortunately, the esteemed educators at NASI understand that this challenge usually can be overcome with effective reading instruction. The usual, popular reading approaches are not effective for students with dyslexia because these approaches do not focus on the decoding skills struggling readers need to succeed.
This is one of the reasons that students from as far as Rockford, IL to the Indiana and Wisconsin border make the choice to pursue their credentials at NASI. The New Age Spa Institute attracts students relocating from all over the world from Florida, Arizona, and California to Poland, Mexico, and Canada. NASI’s knowledge of the beauty and wellness industry, and training as a top tier facility are hallmarks of #NASIeducation.
Structure Literacy
Explicitly teaches systematic word identification and decoding strategies, which are vital tools for those with dyslexia. The elements that make up Structure Literacy work together, and they are:
- Phonology – Study of sound structure of spoken words
- Sound-Symbol Association – Matching sounds to letters, and vice versa
- Syllables – Dividing words into syllables helps readers associate vowel spellings with vowel sounds
- Morphology – Study of base elements (smallest unit of word) helps reader decode meanings of complex words
- Syntax – Set of rules that dictate sequence and function of words in a sentence; also called language mechanics
- Semantics – Concerned with meaning and comprehension of written language
The New Age Spa Institute, a CIDESCO internationally accredited school, ensures that our educators have the deep content knowledge and specific teaching expertise needed for students. NASI students in all of our programs (Esthetics, Clinical Aesthetics, Clinical Massage Therapy, Nail Technology, Professional Makeup Artistry) come from many different backgrounds. This is why our curriculum and teaching style is as varied as our student body.
