With fall is in full swing, it’s time to talk skin. As most of us can attest, the dewiness so prominent in summer turns to dryness in the autumn and winter months. During summer and for those of us lucky enough to vacation in warm climates like Florida or Texas, there’s often more humidity to help moisture stay in the skin and protect its barrier. In the cooler months, the air gets drier outside and insider (heaters). When our skin starts losing moisture, the barrier gets disrupted, causing increased sensitivity, dryness, and irritation. So really, it’s not just trendy to change up your makeup and skincare routine for fall—it’s crucial!
It’s minor tweaks that can make a major difference.
- Switch to a Thicker Moisturizer
We need to compensate for the weather change by adding more moisture to the skin and helping retain hydration. Ms Timea, CIDESCO Diplomate and Esthetics Educator, recommends switching from your summer oil-free moisturizers to a heavier cream with ceramides. Ceramides are healthy, essential fatty acids that occur naturally in our skin, but we need to replenish during the colder months. Skin lacking in ceramides results in dryness and irritation.
- Add a Lip Moisturizer
Our skin does not like sudden transition, and lip moisturizers are great additions to your fall skincare regimen. CIDESCO Diplomate Ms. Nataliya, NASI Esthetician and Educator, highly recommends Fill Derma Lips from Sesderma. A lip volumizer formulated with hyaluronic acid nanospheres and collagen, this lip balm is our secret to fight against chapped lips, upper lip wrinkles, and add volume to the lips without having to resort to injectables (i.e., Juvéderm, Sculptra, Rediesse, Restylane, etc.). Students enrolled in our Clinical Aesthetics program review the esthetician’s role in medspas procedures like “Dealing with Clients Post-Injectables”, and theoretical knowledge on Microneedling, PRP treatments, and facial lift threads.
- Add a Humidifier
External factors like dry heat in your home or workplace are another threat to skin barrier. Along with your regular skincare regimen, our NASI team suggests investing in a humidifier during the fall and winter. Low humidity levels degrade the skin’s natural moisture barrier, which can lead to flaking, cracking, and peeling. The more moisture in the air, the more moisture it’ll share with you skin. Hydrated skin is happy skin!
- Tis the Season for Retinoids
Humidity and warm temperatures usually buffer the irritating effects of topical retinoids and exfoliants. This is most likely because of increased oiliness of the skin during the summertime. As you shift to Autumn, we recommend you consistently follow up retinoid use with hydrating ingredients. As every good esthetician knows, the fall is the beginning of peel season! Chemical exfoliation is best in fall and winter because you’re less prone to inflammation due to hot summer temperatures. Ms. Ania, Director of Education at New Age Spa Institute, loves recommending the Eye Revive Cream from Coterie Fresh ‘N Clear. Formulated with all-trans retinol which helps increase firmness and elasticity, and Vitamin E, K, and Emblica which soothe the skin while quenching free radicals. No parabens, oils, or fragrances mark this non-comedogenic product a fall keeper! The eye area is the thinnest, most fragile skin on the entire body! This is why our eyes (and neck!) show signs of aging much quicker than skin on other parts of our body.
5. For Super-Sensitive Skin,
Hydrate with Aloe, CBD, & Green Tea Polyphenols
People with sensitive skin, or with conditions like psoriasis or eczema, might experience a burning sensation or feel overly sensitive for a few days (even weeks) during the transition of seasons. NASI says the best thing you can do is hydrate and coat your skin with calming and nourishing ingredients like Aloe Vera, CBD, and Green Tea Polyphenols. Ms. Bianca, esthetics educator at NASI, recommends her go-to favorite Coterie Fresh ‘N Clear’s Phyto Boost Serum. It’s a pharmaceutical grade serum formulated with the highest percentage available for Green Tea Polyphenols on the market: 90%! It’s amazing for inflamed, sensitive, and acneic skin. She recommends using it after advanced procedures like Epidermal Leveling (can be referred as Dermaplaning), Hydra plus, Microdermabrasion, and Ultrasonic, which are classes taught in the Clinical Aesthetics Certification program at NASI. But really, it can be used any time!
