Most of us are familiar with the two little words that give our skin a more youthful appearance, but have you ever thought about how the two differ? Both are applied to the skin to reverse signs of aging and improve the imperfections that have happened over time but they also differ.
What is Retinol? A form of vitamin A, and in some way retinol occurs naturally in the skin. It is also one of the most commonly used anti-aging over-the counter ingredient, usually in concentration from 0.05 to 1 percent. Estheticians use much higher percentages during facial treatments to stimulate cell renewal process and improve the conditions of the skin such as wrinkles, acne or hyperpigmentation. When used in products couple times per week, cells convert the retinol into retinoic acid, improving fine lines, discoloration and giving the skin an overall revitalized boost. This is one of the best “golden standards” to start using early on in life (but not on daily basis). It may take several weeks to notice a difference but with continued application it will revitalize the skin. Professional retinol creams and serums (containing additional beneficial ingredients such as antioxidants, plant stem cells or minerals) are sold by estheticians and are also available in doctor’s offices.
What about Retinoid? Related to vitamin A, retinoids are chemical compounds that do not occur naturally. Retinoids are frequently used to treat acne and reduce wrinkles by drastically speeding up the cell renewal. Retinoid, such as Retin-A or Tretinoin, reduces acne outbreaks and prevents pores from clogging. For those using retinoid to fight wrinkles, retinoids produce new collagen to minimize the appearance of lines, and fade the dreaded age spots. Retinoids sometimes come with side effects like peeling and redness, especially if the skin is normally sensitive. Retinoid products are available by prescription only.
Whether you’re using the retinol based product or retinoid product, SPF is mandatory.
