It’s pretty common knowledge that a sufficient amount of sleep is the key to success. Too little sleep leads to weight gain, brain fog, over eating, and irritability, among other things, but did you know that it also can make you look older faster.
In the United States, 40% of people, only gets 6.8 hours of sleep instead of the recommended 7 to 9 hours.
Here are some pretty common results if sleep deprivation that is manifested on the skin:
- Dehydratedskin
- Dark under-eye circles
- Under eye bags
- Poor skin nourishment which means your cells don’t heal as fast
- Dull and sallow skin
- Wrinkles, wrinkles everywhere: forehead, crow’s feet, third eye area, nasolabial folds
Using proper creams and serums and getting regular facial treatments can help combat these signs but if lack of sleep is the main reason you are experiencing any of the above, try to get more sleep. Try to go to bed even 15 minutes early and start with that. That’s almost 2 extra hours of sleep per week!
I know, I know, its easier said than done but start small. One of the biggest issues that effects sleep and skin is use of cell phones and tablets. While it may seem impossible to leave your devices alone, doing so at least 1 hour (2-3 is ideal) before bed will help you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.
We all love our devices and want to be connected to our family and friends through Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram but cell phones especially affect our REM sleep and melatonin levels. Translation: you have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep.
FYI: Talking on your cell phone also can cause wrinkles, acne, and pigmentation issues because it touches the skin the entire time you are on the phone, unless you use a headset.
Try making simple changes and it could take years off your face, not to mention you will feel more alert and have more energy!
