Please note: Licensure requirements vary state by state. Consult with your stateโs department of financial and professional regulation. Beauty Professional in Illinois? IDFPR
Cosmetology License: Mastering the Art of Beauty
The Cosmetology License is your passport to a diverse world of beauty. With comprehensive training in hair, skin, and nails, cosmetologists have a wide array of services at their fingertips. From haircuts and coloring to nail art and skincare, this license offers a holistic approach to beauty. Ideal for those who aspire to become well-rounded beauty experts and salon owners. Cosmetology is a license program comprised of 1500 hours, with a curriculum focused on mostly hair. In fact, cosmetologists receive very little training in skin (85 hours) and nail technology (55 hours). Although cosmetology covers some skincare in schooling, itโs not anywhere near as in depth as going to school specifically for skin. If youโd like to be a hairdresser, colorist, or specialize in hair extensions then this program is for you.
Esthetician License: Nurturing Skin Health
Estheticians specialize in skincare, providing treatments that enhance and maintain the skin’s health and appearance. From facials and waxing to advanced techniques like microdermabrasion and chemical peels, estheticians focus on helping clients achieve radiant skin. If you’re passionate about skincare and want to work in spas, dermatology clinics, or even start your own skincare practice, this license is for you. As the skin is the largest organ of the human body, students have plenty of coursework to cover in the 750-hour curriculum. Someone who studies to become an esthetician wants to work only with skin and can perform facials, body treatments, full body waxing, makeup, eyelash extensions, and skincare modalities like laser, IPL, microcurrent, ultrasonic, LED. Massage therapists combine therapeutic techniques with a healing touch to promote relaxation and overall well-being. Whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for a stress reliever, massage benefits range from improved posture to pain management. With a Massage License, you’ll learn various massage methods, anatomy, and physiology. Career opportunities for massage therapists extend past the spa and salon settings. Licensed massage therapists are sought after in hospital settings, chiropractor private practices, and gyms with sports massage specialization just to name a few. Some massage therapists find independent entrepreneurship an avenue for career advancement as well.

Makeup Certification: Unleash Your Artistic Flair
Makeup artists use their creative prowess to enhance natural beauty or create striking looks for special occasions. While not a license, obtaining a Makeup Certification equips you with the skills to master the art of makeup application. This is an excellent choice for individuals who want to focus solely on makeup artistry for events, photoshoots, and the entertainment industry. Bonus: Makeup Certification is the quickest program to finish – only 60 hours! A final practical exam is administered at the end of the course. To learn more about the Makeup Certification Program, please CLICK HERE! Next classes in session on September 9th and October 17th โ Limited spots open!
Please note: While other states have different regulations, Illinois does not recognize make-up artists or hair stylists. A Professional Makeup Certification is available to licensed Estheticians and Cosmetologists. *Per the Barber, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Hair Braiding and Nail Technology Act of 1985 you need to hold an active Illinois license as a cosmetologist to arrange, braid and/or dress hair (up-doโs) and you would need to hold either a cosmetology or esthetics license to offer make-up or eyelash services. As listed on our website, click on the link to find the full Act and Rules: http://www.idfpr.com/profs/cosmo.asp
Though a makeup training program may claim that their Makeup Certification is approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), the IBHE does not overturn the IDFPR Act and Rules. The regulations set forth by the IDFPR, Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, state that makeup artists must be licensed in esthetics or cosmetology to perform services.
Why enroll in Professional Makeup Certification if I can just watch Youtube or Tiktok videos? Skill development, insights on trends, and professional credibility! ย A makeup certification lends you instant credibility that signals to clients and employers you have undergone formal training and are equipped with the necessary skills to deliver exceptional results. This credibility can help you stand out in a crowded marketplace and establish your reputation as a trusted makeup professional.
What career path fits your passion and needs?ย Each pathway offers unique opportunities for personal and professional growth. Consider your passions, strengths, and long-term goals as you decide which avenue to pursue. Whichever path you choose, ongoing education and staying up-to-date with industry trends are crucial for success.
Please note: Professional licensing is especially important to pay attention to if youโre not originally from the United States. In other countries, a cosmetologist license can refer to a professional that has expertise in skin, while a professional focused on hair can simply be referred to as a hairdresser or stylist. The differences between these distinct professions are sometimes lost in translation. The key to unlocking the best profession for yourself is deciding in what part of the beauty industry you wish to become a trained expert.
