My Why: Karina’ s Journey Into Esthetics

At the New Age Spa Institute, we believe passion grows from purpose. That’s why we created the “My Why” assignment—a chance for our students to pause, reflect, and share the story behind their decision to pursue a career in the beauty and wellness industry. Every story is unique, and together, they remind us of the incredible power of resilience, creativity, and education.

Today, we’re proud to highlight the journey of Karina, a dedicated esthetics student whose story is all about self-discovery, confidence, and helping others shine.

Meet Karina

“My name is Karina. I live in Niles, IL, and I’m currently a student at New Age Spa Institute in Des Plaines.” Karina’s path to esthetics wasn’t a straight line—it was a journey full of exploration, growth, and finding where her heart truly belonged.

The Path to Esthetics

For Karina, skincare was personal before it became professional. “I chose to pursue a career in esthetics because I want to help others feel good about themselves. I enjoy providing relaxation and working interpersonally with people. I’ve struggled with my own skin in the past and found joy in learning how to properly care for it.”

That desire to combine personal healing with helping others is at the core of her “why.”

Choosing a school was an important decision—and for Karina, reputation spoke volumes.
“I chose NASI because it was recommended by a previous student. I have friends who attended other institutes like Estelle or Mario Tricoci, and they told me they wished they had gone to New Age instead. I’ve even seen students come in for remedial hours after struggling to pass their state board due to negligent education elsewhere. That confirmed I made the right choice.” At NASI, Karina has found not just education, but confidence in her future. We strive to make our students feel empowered in their career and choices!

A Unique Background

Karina graduated from Niles West High School in 2019. Like many young adults, she wasn’t sure what career path to take right away. She worked and saved money while thinking about her future, even exploring her passion for sound by attending an audio engineering institute in Chicago.

“Although I still practice audio engineering, I found it difficult to turn that artistic passion into a lucrative career.”

Now, she balances her morning classes at NASI with evening shifts as a server at Moretti’s—a true testament to her work ethic and determination!

Favorite Services: Giving & Receiving

Before enrolling at NASI, Karina had only received one facial and had never been waxed. Today, she’s discovered a whole new world of self-care and service. Her enthusiasm for both sides of esthetics shows just how much she’s grown in her journey.

• Favorite to receive: Epidermal leveling (dermaplaning) or a chemical peel

• Favorite to perform: Facial massage, microdermabrasion with hydrofacial, and waxing

Looking Ahead

Graduation is only the beginning. Karina plans to take her state board in September, and once licensed, she has clear goals:
“I want to work in a spa focusing on relaxation and hair removal services. An ultimate dream of mine is to work in a high-end hotel spa downtown—or even provide in-home services.”

With her drive, passion, and commitment to excellence, we have no doubt she’ll make her mark in the industry!
