What is Lymphatic Drainage Anyway?

lymphatic drainage massage

During our esthetics program, our students learn the technique of manual lymphatic drainage for the face and neck. See a short video here. Since this technique doesn’t seem as popular as the typical services an esthetician performs, many of our students do not even know what this service is. For those of you who are unfamiliar with MLD, read on to learn what it is and the advantages of it.

To put it simply, lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage that is used to eliminate toxins from the body. This is done by moving the fluid out of your tissues into lymph nodes where bacteria, viruses and other harmful microorganisms are destroyed. Typically the massage technique includes small “pumping” movements to help move the lymph and fluid along.

Some benefits of the lymphatic drainage massage for the face and neck are:

  1. It is detoxifying [obviously J]
  2. Reduces puffiness and dark circles around the eyes.
  3. Eliminates signs of fatigue
  4. Decreases excess fluid retention-it helps with swelling
  5. It improves circulation of blood and nutrients
  6. Repairs cells and improves skin appearance
  7. Increases oxygen supply to the tissue
  8. It has sedative and relaxing effect, perfect for those suffering from stress, insomnia or anxiety

While lymphatic drainage is not recommended for those with high blood pressure, rheumatism, asthma, lupus, cancer, arthritis, and thrombosis or thyroid problems it can have glorious effects for those who receive it, especially on a regular basis.

For an esthetics student of New Age Spa Institute, this is covered in the course curriculum. However, because we believe this is such an excellent massage for clients to receive and professionals to learn, we offer this class as a continuing education course.
